judging amy

Drama series (1999 - present) featuring Amy Brenneman as the eponymous judge (also the show's creator and executive producer), a recently divorced single mom who has moved back to her old hometown, Hartford, Connecticut, to become a juvenile court judge. The show also stars Tyne Daly (well-known as Detective Lacey from Cagney and Lacey) as her opinionated mother, a social worker.

"Judging Amy, which is based on the real-life experiences of Brenneman's own mother, a superior court judge, is about three generations of women living together as they confront the personal and professional dilemmas in their changing lives." (CBS excerpt)

This particular episode, "Culture Clash" (ep #1-15, first airing February 15th 2000), was accompanied by on-screen captioning, referred to as "subtext for the thinking impaired" by some viewers !

Judge Amy was sitting on a commission that was holding a hearing on another judge who was accused of harrassing a prostitute. John played the judge's lawyer, Dwayne Cochrane, The judge refused to defend himself not wanting to use 'I'm gay' as a defence because he felt that his 30 years on the bench should speak for itself.

John was in three distinct segments of the episode, although he didn't have very many lines.
