Globe, Playhouse Honored

The Old Globe won 24, and the La Jolla Playhouse 14, of the annual Drama-Logue Awards presented Sunday in Los Angeles. The magazine Drama-Logue, which doesn't name single winners in each category, honors outstanding achievement in theater in Southern California.

"Pygmalion" and "London Assurance" led the Globe shows with six awards apiece. "Pygmalion" was picked for production, direction (Jack O'Brien), two performances (Eric Christmas, Ellis Rabb), scenic design (Richard Seger) and costume design (Robert Morgan).

"Assurance" was cited for production, direction (Craig Noel), performances (Jeffrey Combs, David Ogden Stiers), costume design (Deborah Dryden) and sound design (John Kilgore).

"Torch Bearers" got three performance awards (Kandis Chappell, Tom Lacy and Katherine McGrath). Winning in two categories were "Vikings" P -- writing (Stephen Metcalfe) and ensemble performance; "Greater Tuna" -- performance (Larry Drake) and costumes (Lewis Brown); and "Of Mice and Men" -- lighting (Kent Dorsey) and sound design (Michael Holten).

In other awards, Robert Lord won in writing for "Bert and Maisy," Paul Rudd for performance in "Stage Struck" and Douglas Schmidt for scenic design of "Fallen Angels."

For the La Jolla Playhouse, "A Man's a Man" garnered the most citations -- production, direction (Robert Woodruff), scenic design (Doug Stein), sound design (Douglas Wieselman, Victor Zupanc) and two performances (Bill Irwin, John Vickery).

Michael Weller won for his original play "Ghost on Fire," which also was picked for production, direction (Timothy Near) and two performances (Holly Hunter, William Russ).

Other awards were for "The Seagull" -- lighting design (Richard Riddell) and performance (Penny Fuller) -- and "Merrily We Roll Along" -- performance (Chip Ziem).
