The historic Pantages Theatre was one of the most beautiful theatres in town when it opened on June 4, 1930, just east of the famous corner of Hollywood & Vine. As one of the first theatres to show "talkies", it features a large stage, to accomodate the popular live shows that accompanied movies.
In 1949, Howard Hughes bought the Pantages. It became the host location for the Academy Awards ceremonies until 1959, and the host for the Emmy Awards each year until 1977, when the Pantages re-opened as a legitimate (live) theater, its large stage perfect for Broadway-style musicals. The Pantages is known for its lavish comfort, with 2,705 large, comfortable seats, spacious public areas, lounges and restrooms. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the architecture, especially the grand lobby, which is considered one of the finest examples of richly decorated Art Deco design. The best seats are mid-orchestra and lowest balcony. |
